Fun can be music.
Use a favorite tune to sing the multiplication tables. Allow soft music with no words to play in the background while working. A Bach fugue is mathematically constructed! Fun can be color. Make flashcards on colored 3x5 cards, student learn to hi-lite the directions in green and the answers in orange. On a page with mixed applications, use a purple hi-liter to hi-lite plus signs. Use colored pencil to do the math! Mix it up so they never know which color they get to use and which thing need hi-lited. Students of all ages enjoy color!
Fun can be pictures.
Use visual photographs whenever possible to illustrate a problem. Draw a picture to illustrate a problem or set of problems. Student might find pictures in a magazine to illustrate some of their homework problems, or write a math problem of their own based on a picture they find.
Fun can be construction.
Use building blocks like Leggos as rewards for correct answers. The color and shape and size can be determined by attributes in each answer. Odd number blue, multiples of 7 are triple blocks. The older they are the more challenging the attributes are, again a middle school student love to play with Leggos. Jenga blocks have all sorts of possibility for de-construction!
Fun can be throwing.
A simple soft ball or bean bag can be used in to make drills for math fun, throw it back and forth to the student , teacher asks and throws, student answers and throws back. A indoor basketball hoop in the front of the class is motivation to get an answer correct and shoot.
Fun can be acting or talking with your hands. Develop hand signals for vocabulary words to help memory. Create a mantra or a chant to recite daily. Act out the steps to solve a problem. Put students into groups and create a quick two minute scene on illustrating a problem or using steps to solve a problem.
Fun can be manipulating. Many schools use fraction tiles, or attribute blocks. Anything can be cut apart and manipulated on desks and put back together. Post it notes with numbers can be used to do problems on the desk. They can be color coded them by place value!
Fun can be an unusual medium.
There are special Expo markers that can write on windows, many desk surfaces can have regular, (odorless please!)Expo markers do work can be done right on the desk and erased with regular cleaning spray. Giant pencils, pencils that are straws, can be the simple thing that make the lesson enjoyable
Fun can be interesting creative games. Games of all shapes and sizes can be used in the classroom to make math fun and still be part of the daily lesson! Pencil and paper games, challenging board games, or large full classroom games where students get up and move around and even outdoor activities all have adaptations available to use to making learning math extra fun. |
